Annual afrobeats DJ Competition of US-based disc jockey Ekpeyong Otu, aka DJ MixMaster Brown, has commenced, and this year’s competition is titled ‘Lords of The Mix.’
The competition is open to all nationalities without regard to colour or race. Wazobia Market sponsors this year’s competition.
Otu said he started the competition in 2018 to promote afrobeats music, inspire disc jockeys and create an opportunity for artistes, fans, and other industry stakeholders to network.
In a statement sent to Merrymakers, MixMaster Brown said, “This is one of the ways by which I am giving back to the industry that I have helped to build in the last 33 years.”
Five seasoned DJs will be judging the contestants, a list that includes the likes of DJ Jimmy Jatt and DJ Tee. The top three winners will go home with cash prizes.
The judges will be considering the DJs with the best mix, blend, timing, scratch, beat juggling, speed work, stagecraft, and crowd feedback. In addition, their song set must not be less than five percent of afrobeats.
Past winners of the competition are an African-American, DJ D-Wreck (2018); DJ Krooks (2019), and DJ Silent Killa (2020), both Hispanic.
