Atiku-Wike Rift: Reconciliation Meeting ended in a deadlock

As a way of ending the crises rocking the PDP as it relates to Atiku Abubakar and Governor Nyesom Wike, a reconciliation committee was constituted by the party to broker peace between the two juggernauts. The meeting was held at Government House, Port Harcourt, yesterday for over four hours, and at the end of the session, the committee did not achieve the desired reconciliation.

Recall that Governor Wike and Atiku have been at each other throats ever since the PDP candidate elected to pick Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State in his stead as his running mate for the 2023 election. Wike has earlier contested and lost the party’s presidential ticket to Atiku.

Governor Wike’s team comprises the former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Bello Adoki; Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State; former Governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke; former Governor of Gombe State, Dr. Ibrahim Dankwambo and Mimiko.

The Wike’s team was led by the Former Governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Mimiko, and has this to say after the meeting ended, “This is a reconciliation process, there are some issues out there which need further deliberation when the committees meet again.”

Though, Mimiko refused to reveal the main issue that led to the drawback of the reconciliation, sources said the insistence of Wike’s team that the National Chairman of the party, Iyorchia Ayu, must step down before any reconciliation can commence remains a big issue.

On the other hand, Atiku’s camp has the likes of the Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri; Hon. Adamu Waziri and Hon. Eyitayo Jegede.

Also addressing journalists at the end of the meeting, Fintiri stated that talks were ongoing to achieve the desired objectives. He is what he said: “We are aware that Nigerians are anxious and waiting for the PDP to take over government in 2023. We have met as leaders, members of the same political family, and we have opened the discussion, work is in progress, and we will continue.

“At the end of the day, we will broker peace, and we will unify the party and Nigerians.”

Mimiko added that the committee has agreed to foster unity within the party, which would be achieved by the group soon, and said the committee would have another meeting to deliberate on more issues to have a conclusion.

“We have agreed that there is a need for us to enhance unity within our party,” he said.

After the meeting, members of the committee had a private meeting with Governor Wike at his private residence in Rumueprikom, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.

Atiku and Wike had agreed to constitute the committee at a meeting they held in Abuja a few weeks ago at the residence of a former Minister of Information and National Orientation, Prof. Jerry Gana, as part of the framework for the resolution of their differences.

Various efforts by the party stakeholders and elders to resolve the Atiku/Wike crisis have yielded no results and made Nigerians speculate that Wike might decamp or support other party’s presidential candidates for the forthcoming election.

Gana Begs Wike

In a related development, a former minister of information, Jerry Gana, yesterday advised Wike to put away the disappointment of the past and look to the future when he will become Nigeria’s president.

Gana said this at the flag-off of a flyover in the Obio-Akpor area of Rivers State. He also appealed to the governor to remain at the party and not hold back his commitment to the party.
