The 100 percent records of the Nigerian Falconets ended yesterday as they were humbled by the Netherlands 2 goals to nothing. With the loss, the Falconets have crashed out of the U-20 Women’s World Cup. Everything seemed to be against the Nigerian girls as they tried everything, yet nothing worked.
Although they dominated the entire match proceedings, the Danjuma girls couldn’t finish. They hit the bar several times and spent the entire second half playing in the Dutch half, yet there was nothing to show for their hard work. It was a wasteful match for the Nigerian side.
The Danjuma girls kept trying to score from a distance, but the long-range did not hit the target. It was a bad strategy from the Falconets.
Furthermore, the 50:50 chance that would have resulted in a goal at the stoppage time in the form of a penalty was overturned after the VAR review.
The Dutch side running over the Nigerian team now is set to face Spain in the semi-finals.
It was an unlucky night and even a more terrible weekend for Nigerian Sports.
The loss of the Falconets added to the woes of Nigerian sports. On Sunday, Nigerian-Born British boxer Anthony Joshua lost the rematch to Oleksandr Usyk in an attempt to regain all his titles lost to Usyk last year.
In addition, Kamaru Usman too lost his Welterweight Championship world title at UFC 278 to Leon Edwards.
