Falconets scored another late goal against South Korea, taking all three points against the Asian side. Esther Onyenezide’s goal in the 83rd minute was enough to seal the evening for the Falconets.

The 1-0 victory against South Korea gave the Nigerian U20 side 6 points to qualify them for the quarterfinals of the 10th FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup finals ongoing in Costa Rica.

The Chris Danjuma-led team recorded a 1-0 victory against South Korea in their second group game played on Sunday, August 14, 2022.

South Korea had in the opening match defeated Canada 2-0, while the Falconets edged their European counterpart France out with a 1-0 win to announce their presence at the tournament.

When both teams met at the Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto, Alajuela, the quarterfinals ticket was dangling and could have swung either way since both won their opening matches.

However, Esther Onyenezide’s goal in the 83rd minute settled the game giving the Falconets 1-0 victory against South Korea.

France’s match against the Falconets was similar to the Koran match in that the Nigerian girls could not break the South Korean defense in the first half.

There were some panic moments, though, one of which happened in the 54th minute, when Esther Onyenezide’s shot from the right side was pushed away by Yoonji Do.

Also, Eunyoung Lee unleashed a fierce 25-yard shot in the 64th minute at the Nigerian goal, but the Falconet’s goalkeeper, Oyono Omini, was there to successfully blocked the shot.

The game continued without much difference between the two teams until the 83rd minute when midfielder Onyenezide curled a shot past Do.

There was wild celebration when the goal stuck the back of the Korean net.

It was the match’s only goal as Hayeon Mu missed from a corner kick, and Garam Chun hit the upright from a free kick.

The defense kept things tight at the back even, and Mercy Idoko, Onyenezide, and Bashirat Amoo worked tirelessly in midfield.

The Falconets held on for all three points and booked a place in the quarterfinals with two victories from two games.

The Falconets now take on Canada in their final group game scheduled for the early hours of Thursday, August 18, 2022.
