Morocco 2022: South Africa Beats Super Falcons in their first game

Super Falcons started their Morocco 2022 12th Women African Cup of Nations on a disappointing note on Monday when they lost 2-1 to the Banyana Banyana South Africa.

The Falcons, who are pursuing their 10th champions crown, were also defeated by South Africa 10 months ago at home in the final match of the first-ever Aisha Buhari Women’s Tournament.

The match ended goalless after 45 minutes of play.

However, South Africa took the lead and scored twice in two minutes of the hour-mark. The goal came from Jarmaine Seoposenwe, who beat the Falcon’s goalkeeper Tochukwu Oluehi. It was all thanks to the skillful display of Natalie Cesane, who edged out Falcon’s hard-working Ashleigh Plumptre with brilliant footwork before setting up the striker.

While the South African team and fans were still celebrating, a classy exchange of passes in the middle beat Michelle Alozie with a long-range pass on the Nigerian right, and Hildah Magaia shot past the Falcon’s goalkeeper for a second goal.

Francisca Ordega and Uchenna Kanu were thrown into the match to replace tired Asisat Oshoala and Ifeoma Onumonu, respectively, and the Falcons looked good to equalize the match. Hence, they started the comeback two minutes into added time by Rasheedat Ajibade when she scored in the box after fantastic work and a better pass by Captain Onome Ebi. However, it was meant to be as the Falcons could not get another goal before the referee blew the final whistle.

For the Falcons to be in contention, they must get all three points against Botswana in their second match on Thursday. Recall that the Super Falcons are the Cup holders.
