Impeachment: Security experts say Senators' move is a step in the right direction

Security experts welcomed the recent move by the minority caucus of the senate to impeach the Nigerian President with opened arms.

Chigozie Ubani is a security expert and has this to say about the impeachment threat on the President:

"It (Impeachment) is a step in the right direction; in fact, It is delayed. Four years ago, I was on Channels TV, and on that programme, I called for the impeachment of the President over the abduction of the Dapchi girls. We bent backward to bring a retired general to come and solve the security issues bedeviling us, and worse situations have come our way. What else is he waiting for, or is he there to fulfill a lifetime ambition? He should have resigned and saved us from this calamity.

"What is lacking is the political will and the capacity to deal with insecurity. I am not one of those who lament the failure of intelligence. Everything we have seen and heard so far shows that there has been intelligence," he added.

He claimed that given the information available to the Presidency, the security chiefs, and the Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, he stressed they are complicit in the security situation.

"What do these terrorists want? Who are they making these demands from? Why are we not able to contain them according to intelligence already intercepted? In my view, the Commander-in-Chief, and his security chiefs are complicit; In fact, they have compromised the security of the Nigerian state".

Another security expert, John Emeliku, said Nigeria lacks the ingredients of a stable, harmonious, and prosperous nation. He stressed that the diminishing state of the Naira compared to other neighbouring countries would escalate the spate of kidnappings, terror attacks, and instability which may gear the citizen to demand a change of government.

"Even the senate that has been docile all this time realises that that insecurity has reached its hilt. The only problem is that minority parties cannot form a quorum when it comes to impeachment, because the APC has the majority while the PDP, the APGA, and the NNPP are few. That is why the Presidency is calling their bluff. Although they don't have the numerical strength, they will help put the security agencies and the Federal Government on their toes. The truth is that you can never know the strength of any group. It can lead to an uprising that may enforce a change of government," he said.

Another security consultant, Adamu Sagir, painted a more gloomy future picture. He said there is no light at the end of the tunnel for the country as the centre is weak. Sagir stressed that the government has refused to heed the warnings of locals who witnessed strange movements within the Kuje and Bwari areas of the Federal Capital Territory, talkless of regions of Niger and Nassarawa states.

Backing the recent lawmakers' threat to impeach Mr. President, he said that the President's previous orders as the country's Commander-in-Chief seem to have fallen on deaf ears of the military's top brass. He also stressed that the Buhari government had lost touch with the country's citizens.

"What is happening is an indicator that a lot is bound to fail in this country. The systems seem to be failing day by day.

"Early this year, two governors made very strong complaints one on one, the Governor of Nassarawa State complained to the President about the presence of Boko Haram operatives in some parts of his state. By looking away from the complaints made by grassroots people in Niger, Nassarawa, and Abuja, it amounted to the negligence of duty, and it shows that the government is not responsive to the plight of the masses," he said.
