More than 200 fish farmers at Ikangba/Agoro, Ijebu-Ode in Odogbolu Local Government Area of Ogun State lost well over N500m of their investment to a flood disaster that hit their fish pond clusters.
The flooding occurred last week Friday after a heavy downpour washed away the fishes of the farmer, which they estimated to be more than N500 million.
Lazarus Okole, the Chairman of the Ikanga Agoro Fish Farmers Association, disclosed this at a press briefing held on Friday.
Okole said the affected farmers spread across five fish farmers’ clusters of Ifeoluwa, Asejere, Progressive, Joye and Kajola.
He explained that though the farmers had in the past experienced mild flooding, the magnitude and impact of the losses suffered could not be compared with that of the latest disaster.
He also said that if the FG and state Governor, Dapo Abiodun, did not come to the rescue of the farmers, many of them might die from the debilitating shock of the huge losses.
Okole said, “We sincerely hereby beg President Muhammadu Buhari and our dear governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun to come to our aid. This could be in form of granting us soft loans to cushion the effect of these tragic losses so that our members can have something with which they can start all over again.”
