Commonwealth Games: Nigerian Weightlifter Olarinoye Adenike wins the nation’s first gold medal

Nigeria is on the road to success in the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham as Weightlifter Olarinoye Adenike Adijat wins the country’s first gold medal.

Olarinoye recorded a total of 203kg setting the new Commonwealth Games record in the process.

On the medals table, Nigeria currently occupies the ninth position, while Australia holds the top spot with 13 gold, eight silver, and 11 bronze.

New Zealand is in second place with seven gold, four silver, and two bronze medals.

England trails from the third position with five gold medals, 12 silver, and four bronze.

Canada and Scotland are in fourth and fifth respectively.

Looking forward to other games, Team Nigeria hopes to increase her medal tally when actions resume today on Day 3 of the Games.

Edidiong Umoafia will be in action in the men’s 67kg weightlifting event at NEC Hall 1. At the same time, Team Nigeria will face Malaysia in the men’s team table tennis quarter-final held at NEC Hall 3.

Nigeria will stand a chance of winning a medal in the over 71-75kg of the boxing event, with the country squaring it up with its arch-rival Ghana. Nigerian boxer Adeyinka Benson will face Ghana’s Abubakari Quartey in the round of 16.

Completing the action for the day, Rafiatu Lawal will be competing in the women’s 59kg weightlifting at NEC Hall 1.
