The Secretary-General of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries, Muhammad Barkindo, died late Tuesday.
Barkindo’s death was announced by Mele Kyari, the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, on his Twitter verified handle.
He tweeted:
We lost our esteemed Dr Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo. He died at about 11pm yesterday 5th July 2022. Certainly a great loss to his immediate family, the NNPC, our country Nigeria, the OPEC and the global energy community. Burial arrangements will be announced shortly.

A news report from our source states that Barkindo was honoured on Tuesday by Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) at the State House, Abuja, where he described him as a worthy ambassador of the nation.
Reactions have trailed Barkindo’s death on Social media.
A former lawmaker in the eighth Assembly, Senator Shehu Sani, tweeted:

OPEC, via their Twitter handle @OPECSecretatiat, reacted to Barkindo’s death:
