According to the Nigeria Labour Congress on Thursday, they planned to stage a one-day nationwide protest to pressure the FG to meet the demands of university-based unions.
- The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASSU).
- Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU).
- Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASUU).
- National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
Ayuba Wabba, the President of NLC, was speaking in Abuja when he instructed all NLC affiliate unions to provide directives on the planned one-day national protest from next week.
In his words at the opening of the National Executive Council meeting of the congress:
I think there is reluctance in addressing this issue (of strike), and therefore, CWC has decided that there will be a one-day national protest to call the attention of the government to resolve the issue immediately. After that, the next decision of the CWC will take place.
Wabba did not give the exact date that the nationwide protest would hold.
However, he lamented the present fuel crisis plaguing the nation and added that NLC is closely watching events regarding the Kaduna government and the sacked teachers.
Moreover, the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities implored the FG on Thursday to hasten the resolution process of the disputes between the unions and the FG.
Prof Samuel Edoumiekumo, the chairman of the committee, at the launch of the intellectual property policy document for universities in Abuja, said:
We plead that drastic action is taken to stem the haemorrhage that the system is currently witnessing. For the sake of our children and our society, we need the decision.
