AFCON 2022: Super Falcons Dominated the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon 0-1

It was a well-deserved victory for Nigeria today Thursday as the Super Falcons edged out the Indomitable Lionesses by a lone goal. With that victory, the Super Falcons have now progressed to the semi-finals and qualified for the World Cup next year to be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

The Falcons will not play Morocco, the host country, in the semi-final showdown.

Rasheedat Ajibade was on target for Nigeria and handed the Falcons the winner with her second-half header. It was a tough match at the Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca under the watchful eyes of former Indomitable Lions of Cameroon striker and multiple African Footballer of the year winner Sam Eto.

The Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon came into the game with high hopes coming off the group stage unbeaten, but they performed woefully against the Nigerian ladies. The nine-time champion dominated the ball possession and made the Lionesses chase the game from the beginning to the end.

The match continued with Nigeria having the lion’s share of the ball possession and yet could not convert any. Cameroon played their trademark aggressive pattern and conceded many infringements, which the Nigerian ladies, the likes of Ashleigh Plumptre, Onumonu, and Ajibade, could not convert to goals.

At the end of the first 45 minutes, the match ended goaless, but the Nigerian women looked good enough to get things started when the game resumed owing to the ball possession and goal on target. When the game resumed, it took the Falcons 8 minutes before they scored what would become the only and, at the same time, winning goal.

The goal came at the 53rd minute when Okobi beat Johnson and Claudine Meffometou, who set up Gotham FC’s Onumonu, who wasted no time before sending a beautiful cross to the Atletico Madrid forward Ajibade Rasheedat to head the ball past Cameroonian Goalies, Ange Bawou.

The goal from Rasheedat gave the Cameroonian side a wake-up call that made them attack the Falcons more aggressively. However, the attacks amounted to nothing thanks to the Super Falcons backline.

The scoreboard remained the same till 90 minutes, propelling the Super Falcons of Nigeria into the last four. With the win against Cameroon, Nigeria now has 14 wins in the last 15 previous outings against Cameroon.

Though the Indomitable Lionesses did not qualify for the World Cup, they remain in contention, meaning they have to qualify through inter-confederation play-offs.
