What You Need to Know about Twitter’s New Reporting Tools

Being accountable for one's statement is more important now than ever. You can't just wake up, jump on Social media and say things about someone without looking back. Recently, in a bid for people to be accountable for their utterances, Twitter has improved their tweet reporting.

In December 2017, the company first announced that it was working on enhancing its tweet reporting process. According to Twitter, the new process would make it easier to flag harmful tweets on Twitter taking a "people first" approach. The new process would enable users to flag tweets with ease.

The Old Reporting System

The old Twitter reporting process is not as easy as the new one. Using the old method, users have to browse a series of menus to select the actual rule a tweet broke. The user clicks or taps the tweet's options, hits "Report Tweet," and follows the steps to complete the process. To finish the process, you must answer a few questions about the tweet, the owner and the breach.

However, users discovered that the process was confusing. The old led to the wrong flagging of problematic tweets due to users' confusion. The new process is far better than the old process. It is easier to use and addresses the issue better than the old method.

The New Reporting System

This new process is about what happened and who the tweet is affecting, making it easy to report the issue correctly. If you click on reporting, the user would be asked to explain precisely what happened against the old system that asks them to identify the rule that the tweet broke. In identifying, users guess rather than stating exactly what happened.

The system now gives reporters room to report tweets that target someone else. The process is not just easy to use but simplified and devoid of confusion. Apart from reporting a specific Tweet, you can also report a whole Twitter account.

According to Twitter, the new system is already yielding the expected result. The microblogging platform said the new process had produced a 50 per cent increase in "actionable reports" since the testing started in December (precisely six months ago).

How The New Reporting System Works

When you discover an offensive tweet, you must locate the three dots next to a Tweet, then select "Report Tweet." The platform would ask the user how the tweet affects him or her personally. The user can give his or her name, another person's name or a particular group of individuals.

After that, the screen would display the text: "You're being..." To complete that, pick any options presented to you – spammed, attached, harassed, shown content related to self-harm, sensitive content, or offer tips or currency.

After selecting your preferred option, the app would ask how the user affected you on the previously identified day. The next step is that Twitter will present a run-down of your chosen options. Not only that, the app will give you an explanation of what made the tweet in question abusive. This is in a bid to make sure you are reporting the right content.

The final step is that you will receive an example of what such a post would look like to understand clearly what you are reporting. The feature is helping Twitter get and act upon more reports to help clean up harmful posts. After submitting, Twitter will review and assess the report to see how it violates Twitter's policies.

If such a tweet or account was found guilty, Twitter can either warn the erring account or tweet or ban such.
