Medallion Boss Emerges New ATCON President

The Chief Executive Officer, Medallion Communication Limited, Ikechukwu Nnamani has emerged as the new National President of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON). His election took place at the Association Annual General  Meeting (AGM) and National Executive Council Elections held in Lagos yesterday.

In his acceptance speech, Nnamani said he would focus attention on core areas during his tenure. These, he said, would include increasing and enlarging membership categories and the scope of operations. 

Nnamani who was the former first vice president of the association during 2018/2020 administration, has a core vision of bridging the digital divide between nations and integrates technologies for practical solutions.

Reacting as a president elect, I. Nnamani stated that his administration will basically working in three major areas which include strengthen the secretariat to make it robust, efficient and ensure the right infrastructure, structure and man power to manage the secretariat are in place. 

According to him, "the second core agenda will be on our membership. Our membership is already enlarging each year, so we a will be expounding the categories of our members in quantity, and also quality, adding values to each member from advocacy stand point, and financial stand point."

"The third agenda which he said is about the association is to make sure the association is financially sustainable. 

He also noted that he will also  focus on the need of our members, especially in area where they are have challenges with government agencies, regulators. It is easier when members come through the association to address issues affecting them than when they go alone because you suddenly notice you're not the only one facing same challenge. When the regulator sees that more than one entity is facing same challenge, they take it more serious then when they feel it's isolated to one company.

"The other area i intend to also pursue is telecom financing. A lot of our members have complained about challenges in accessing the right means of equity or even forex to those that requires importation of technical equipment and infrastructure. So, my administration will be engaging with the relevant government agency to put an end to such challenges. " He said.

Under his leadership the Medallion datacenter in Lagos is rated the most interconnected facility in the West African sub-region being the number 1 peering point for the region and boosting all submarine cables in the region, long distance providers, metro fiber providers, mobile services providers, fixed services providers, OTT providers, Internet Exchange, VAS providers, and global Tier1 service providers, amongst others.  

 He also serves as an Executive Board member of Nigerian Internet Registration Association, the organization responsible for managing Nigeria’s Country Code Top Level Domain (.ngTLD).

Engr. Nnamani equally played a key role in the design and manufacture of Luxcore’s LambdaXchange. The LambdaXchange is the world first demonstrated All Optical Router. The LambdaXchange won the best system award at the 2001 Optical Fiber Conference at Anaheim, California.

Prior to co-founding Medallion, Engr. Nnamani worked as an optical systems engineer at Luxcore Networks Inc., in Atlanta Georgia, USA. While at Luxcore, he helped design and manufactured Luxcore’s Semiconductor Waveguide Optical Regenerative Device.

 It is the world’s first integrated photonic wavelength converter chip. It guarantees non-blocking of traffic flow in telecommunication networks. 

Engr. Nnamani holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Tennessee State University, Nashville, USA.
