Everything We Know About ‘The Matrix 4’

  • Warner Bros. has officially announced and now confirmed a release date for The Matrix 4
  • The film will star Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, reprising their original roles
  • Director Lana Wachowski said that the franchise, now 20, has only grown "more relevant"

In August, Warner Bros. announced that the Matrix would indeed return with a fourth installment. Director Lana Wachowski (who helmed the original Matrix trilogy with sibling Lilly Wachowski) will return as director along with both Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, reprising their original roles and Neo and Trinity. (Keanu Reeves had before stated that he would return only if the Wachowskis were on board. Thankfully, one now is.)

Loosely inspired by the Japanese anime film Ghost in the Shell, The Matrix became a sci-fi sensation when it dropped in 1999years before internet boyfriend Keanu Reeves was internet boyfriend material . Since then, the franchise has become one of the most influential cinematic works of all time, inspiring not just other filmmakers but thinkers across literature and academic philosophy.

And The Matrix, which just turned 20, hasn't lost its cultural salience. Director Lana Wachowski recently said that many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now.

While almost zero plot details have yet been released, we cant wait to see how the franchise fully enters the digital age.

Wait, Is Keanu Reeves in the Matrix 4?
Hell yeah he will be, don't worry. Joining Reeves and Moss will be some younger faces, including Jonathan Groff (Mindhunter, Hamilton) and Aquamans Yahya Abdul-Mateen II , who is rumored to be playing a young Morpheus.

Whats the release date?
The Matrix 4 will release May 21, 2021, the same day as John Wick 4, Reeves' other action series (directed by his former Matrix stuntman Chad Stahelski).
