Which of the X-Men Could Have Taken On Thanos?

It might have been nearly four months since Avengers: Endgame first hit screens, but the Russo brothers are keeping fan fervor for the movie fuelled by continually talking about their perspective as directors on specific scenes and theories. First they confirmed that Bucky knew all along about Steve Rogers' plan to reunite with Peggy Carter , agreed with fans that Wanda probably could have handled Thanos all by herself , and even offered an explanation as to how Thanos was able to smash Captain America's "unbreakable" shield .

And now they're imagining how Endgame might have been different if they'd been able to incorporate characters from the X-Mean universe into the MCU. In a recent interview with IGN , Joe Russo said that his dream scenario would involve all but one of the mutants being eradicated by The Snap, leading the sole survivor to team up with the remaining Avengers. For Russo, there was only one character he could envision being involved in Endgame: Wolverine.

"Id love to see a fiercely motivated Wolverine going up against Thanos," he told IGN, although he did not elaborate on whether Wolverine's adamantium claws would be any match for Thanos' double-edged weapon, which cut through vibranium like butter.

It's easy to see why Wolverine was Russo's first choice of X-Men to bring into the MCU : Hugh Jackman's version of the character has anchored no fewer than seven movies in the franchise, and would bring instant audience recognition. That's not to say there aren't more powerful mutants in the canon who could also have kicked Thanos' ass, from Storm to Jean Grey to Colossus. But Russo stands by his (hypothetical) decision to kill off all other X-Men, saying: " Its not our job to give the people what they want, its to give them what they need."

If and when the X-Men ever do make it into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we may well see Wolverine and co. interacting with the Avengers or the Guardians of the Galaxy. Until then, it's good to know that even the directors of these movies have their own private headcanon.
