The 2019 budget speech tops this week's Google Search

South Africans generated more than 100 000 search queries for “Budget speech 2019” as Minister Tito Mboweni presented his plans for government spending this year. South Africans searched Google for the salient details and highlights of the finance minister’s speech.

Also on Wednesday, “Jordyn Woods” generated more than 50 000 search queries on Google as it emerged that Khloe Kardashian’s boyfriend cheated with Kylie Kardashian’s best friend, Jordyn Woods. This news led to Khloe breaking up with Tristan Thompson and Jordyn moving out of Kylie’s house where she once lived.


The death of a fashion designer and icon came as a shock to many fans, leading South Africans to generate more than 50 000 search queries for “Karl Lagerfeld” on Tuesday. Fendi and Chanel are just some of the fashion industry household names that collaborated with the German-born designer throughout his career.

On Monday South Africans generated more than 10 000 search queries each for “Bosasa”, “Caster Semenya”, “Patrice Motsepe” and “DJ Cleo” respectively as news emerged that:

Bosasa was being liquidated

Caster would be appealing the IAAF’s decision to regulate testosterone levels for hyperandrogenic women

Patrice Motsepe denied allegations of nepotism in relation to his role in Independent Power Producers and Eskom

DJ Cleo was seemingly sympathising with rape-accused Kwaito star, Brickz

Trending on Sunday was a hilarious Date My Family contestant, who left South Africans amused enough to generate more than 10 000 search queries for “Siyanda Maphumulo”.

On Saturday, Katy Perry trended with more than 2 000 search queries as news of her recent engagement to Orlando Bloom broke, while on Friday South Africans tested their luck by generating more than 10 000 search queries for “Powerball results 15 February 2019”.

Search trends information is gleaned from data collated by Google based on what South Africans have been searching for and asking Google. Google processes more than 40 000 search queries every second. This translates to more than a billion searches per day and 1.2 trillion searches per year worldwide.
