| M-pesa Global, Safaricom Money Transfer Platform |
The service, which was launched last November, allows all M-PESA users to send money anywhere across the world. In partnership with Western Union, M-PESA global provides its users with easy transfer of cash through Western Union’s 500,000 agents.
“We launched M-PESA Global as part of our strategy to open up M-PESA to the world. The fact that it has been recognised at a global event that is wildly seen as the ‘Oscars’ of the mobile industry is a reflection of how the service has revolutionised the sector”, says Safaricom Chief Financial Services Officer, Sitoyo Lopokoiyit.
M-PESA Global has been shortlisted for “Best Mobile Innovation for Commerce” category alongside Huawei’s CloudCampus Solution and three others.
In 2018, Shupavu, developed by Eneza Education in partnership with Safaricom, won an award for “Best Mobile Innovation for Education” during the same awards.
A statement by John Hoffman, the Chief Executive for GSMA ltd – the firm behind Global Mobile Awards – said, “The GLOMOs provide a world stage on which to celebrate the most inspirational and innovative developments across our industry…the award attracts a significant level of high-quality entries, so being nominated today is a great achievement.”
The 2019 GLOMO winners will be announced during this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC 19) which takes place on 25th – 28th February in Barcelona.
