These dismissals are seen as an anticipated restructuring of the team under the leadership of Doug Field, and Bob Mansfield.
An Apple spokesperson told CNBC that Apple has an incredibly talented team working on autonomous systems and associated technologies and that as the team focuses their work on several key areas for 2019, some groups are being moved to projects in other parts of the company, where they will support machine learning and other initiatives.
“We continue to believe there is a huge opportunity with autonomous systems, that Apple has unique capabilities to contribute, and that this is the most ambitious machine learning project ever,” the spokesperson said.
Reports are unclear on whether all of the 200 employees affected were dismissed or just reassigned. A similar wave of layoffs and reassignments happened back in 2016, also affecting hundreds of employees, and only a year after talk of Apple’s interest in autonomous vehicle technology began.
