Serena Williams Fined In US Open Over Violation Of Code

Serena Williams

Professional Table Tennis player, Serena Williams, and 23-times Grand Slam champion,  has bagged a fine of $17,000 (£13,000) for violations of professional code during the US Open final on Saturday.

The multiple Grand Slam Champion, was humiliated by Naomi Osaka in straight sets but the contest will be long remembered for her involvement with chair umpire Carlos Ramos.

Serena was slammed with a professional code violation for coaching, for racquet abuse and for verbal abuse towards Ramos after she called him a ‘thief’ and a ‘liar’.

It is the usual standard practice in Grand Slam events to be fined for violations of code and the money will come out of her $1.85m (£1.4m) runners-up prize money.

She was fined $10,000 (£7,700) for verbal abuse of Ramos, $4,000 (£3,000) for being warned for coaching, and $3,000 (£2,300) for breaking her racquet.

For each violation fine handed out can total up to $20,000 (£14,400) and Serenas’ main debt to pay was for her verbal abuse of the umpire.
