Keke Protest In Maiduguri

Tricycle operators’ association members in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, has decided to go the streets to protest over extortion by men of the Nigeria Police Force, a situation which has resulted in the standstill of economic activities in Maiduguri.

The association's protests, which has caused serious traffic jam along major roads in the Borno state capital, are demanding that the Police must be prevailed upon to stop the extortion of it's members.

The tricycle riders, popularly called Keke operators, said they embarked on the peaceful protest by boycotting operations Monday along Baga road, and other major roads following the continued “harassment, intimidation and extortion” they face in the hands of men of the Nigeria Police Force, in the State capital, Maiduguri.

According to the Daily Post, one Umar Usman, a tricycle operator in Maiduguri, said some uniform personnel even arrested them and took them to police station when they refused to give them money.

He said:

“A lot of our members have been complaining since and nothing was done about it because they make this extortion to look legal. Our leadership have been reporting this bad incidents to police authorities but they have not been able to make their people stop it.”

However, at the time of filling this report, the police is yet to respond to the allegations of the protesters or issue any official statement in this regards.
