#EndSARS Yields Result As IG Bans SARS From Conducting Stop And Search Operations

Few months ago a campaign via online platforms took off with the hashtag #EndSARS. The campaign came on the heels of various complaints from different quarters against the Anti Robbery outfit of the Nigeria Police Force.

Even with these complaints and campaigns, the public outcry against the SARS men increased as their activities went on unabated.

However it seems the authorities of the Nigeria Police Force has yielded to the #EndSARS campaign as Mr. Ibrahim Idris, the Inspector-General of Police, has officially banned the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) operatives from conducting stop and search operations on roads except when necessary.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN), the IG further warned members of the unit, henceforth, they must only embark on operations with the permission of the commissioner of police in charge of SARS in the police commands.

“You must operate in official uniform clearly marked for identification. I just want to warn you all here that any officer caught engaging in these activities will be dealt with accordingly. The Nigeria Police Force under my leadership shall operate strictly guided by the human rights principles as enshrined in the United Nations charter on human rights” the IG added.

Mr. Ibrahim Idris therefore mandated the Inspector-General of Police’s Monitoring Units and the X-squad and other over sights unit of the Force to monitor the activities of the SARS men.

The police boss however noted that it was due to the activities of the men of the underworld that led the Force to establish the unit.

He said that as part of measures to check the unit, they would be solely mandated to confront only armed robbery cases and violent crimes in the country. The IG also said that men deployed to SARS would undergo training, continuous assessment and psychometric test to determine their suitability or otherwise.

As a result of this, the Inspector General of Police has launched Reformed Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) to improve what is on the ground already.
