A British company based in Bristol is set to create a ‘period policy’ to give women time off work during a painful monthly cycle.
It would be a UK first, allowing women to stay at home for period pain without it being classed as sick leave.
The new initiative which is being put on trial run by social community group, Coexist, is hoping to create a happier and more productive work environment.
The company director, Bex Baxter, says she wants to change the stigma around women’s issues:
“I have managed many female members of staff over the years and I have seen women at work who are bent over double because of the pain caused by their periods,” she said.
“Despite this, they feel they cannot go home because they do not class themselves as unwell.”
Periods are still often considered a taboo, despite affecting half the population, and women can feel embarrassed to admit they are in pain.
Mrs Baxter says the idea has been welcomed enthusiastically by staff of both genders.
