Buhari Vs Jammeh: Another Unwanted War to hit West Africa.

A report reaching us has it that Nigerian warship with troops have left Lagos today, Wednesday 18 of January for Gambia with the goal to unseat Jammeh after his refusal to hand over to a duly elected president. The Nigerian warship, NNS will be joined by other Western African troops in Senegal since the attack will be launched from Senegal, which has border with Gambia.

According to reports by The PUNCH, it was gathered that the troops would be briefed by Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar who is  the present Chief of Air Staff, in the early hours of Wednesday, before it would depart finally for Senegal.

Apart from the NAF and the Nigerian Navy, we learnt that the Nigerian Army would equally be a part of the attack.

A top military officer confirmed to The Punch.
He said , “I can confirm to you that men of the Air Force will leave for Senegal tomorrow ( Wednesday) . They will be briefed by the Chief of Air Staff , Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar , at the Kainji in Niger State" .

He further stated, “That Nigeria is deploying troops is now a certainty after several meetings with The Gambian president yielded no result . The Chiefs of Defense Staff of ECOWAS countries came to Abuja on Saturday , where they discussed what components each gu member state is expected to contribute to the troops that will force Yahya Jammeh out"

“The troops are expected to stay for two weeks and they will be received at a base in Senegal" he added.

According to The Director, Defence Information , Brig . Gen . Rabe Abubakar , " We should not drag the Nigerian military into a political issue . What is happening is a political discussion between the ECOWAS leaders , aimed at solving a political impasse in one of its member states .

Abubakar continued “ Whatever they agreed to do is what will happen . Therefore , the military is not for any engagement regarding Jammeh or any other person for that matter . ”

You recall that this whole planned attack is due to the refusal of president Jammeh to step down and hand over to Adama Barrow of the opposition party, who won the December 1, 2016, presidential election.

Also recall that in spite of all the attempts made by by the African Union and ECOWAS , Jammeh insisted he would not step down nor hand over power to Barrow .
Meanwhile, Barrow has since relocated to Senegal for security reasons.
