Death-row Nigerian Pen A Goodbye Letter to Indonesian lover

A NIGERIAN man facing execution in Indonesia for drug smuggling has written a heartrending letter to say a final goodbye to his lover, a report says.

RAHEEM Agbaje Salami, 42, was taken on Wednesday from a prison in east Java to the penal island of Nusakambangan, off the southern coast of Java where he is due to be executed with up to nine other inmates this month.

He is housed in a newly built cell block, along with Australians Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran. A human rights activist said on Thursday the three men were able to talk to each other.

In a letter submitted through the authorities, Salami asked his Indonesian girlfriend, Angela Intan, to be strong and have faith in God, Viva.co.id news website reported.

“I want to thank and say goodbye to my beloved sweetheart: Angela Intan, who has stood beside me through happiness and sadness,” Salami said in the letter, written in Indonesian.

“Thank you for everything, for the time we spent together,” the letter said.
“Knowing and loving you has been a gift and even though it was only for a short time, it has had a deep meaning in my life.”

Salami was sentenced to death for tying to smuggle heroin into Indonesia.
Two other Nigerian drug traffickers are also scheduled to be executed this month after requests for presidential clemency were rejected.

In 1999, Salami was sentenced to a life term by the Surabaya District Court for bringing 5.3kg of heroin through Surabaya airport.

In 2006, the Supreme Court upgraded his sentence to death.“Raheem is very concerned about his fellow inmates,” Wibowo told Tempo. “He teaches them how to learn English. He always comes to the church.”

The prison island of Nusakambangan has poor medical facilities. It is not known whether Salami’s wish to donate his organs could be enabled.
