Veteran Nollywood actress and filmmaker Bukky Wright is bringing one of her most memorable screen characters back to audiences with The Return of Omotara Johnson, an upcoming theatrical sequel to the celebrated 2009 Yoruba crime drama Omotara Johnson.

The highly anticipated movie is set for a grand premiere on July 5, 2026, at the Monarch Events Centre before opening in cinemas across Nigeria on July 10, 2026.

More than a decade after the original film became a talking point among movie lovers, the sequel promises to revisit the world of Omotara Johnson while introducing new twists, deeper conflicts and a fresh generation of characters.

Produced by Bukky Wright and directed by Adeoluwa Owu, popularly known as Captain Degzy, the project combines nostalgia with contemporary storytelling in what is expected to be one of Nollywood’s notable theatrical releases of the year.

Omotara Johnson Returns With A New Battle

At the heart of the story is Omotara Johnson, widely known as O.J., a woman attempting to leave behind a troubled and dangerous past.

Years after distancing herself from the criminal life that once defined her, O.J. appears to have created a peaceful existence centred around raising her son and maintaining stability.

However, that sense of calm disappears suddenly when her son becomes the prime suspect in a murder case.

The accusation pulls Omotara back into a world she thought she had escaped permanently.

As events unfold, old enemies begin to reappear, hidden betrayals emerge and dangerous secrets start to surface.

The movie also introduces emotional layers involving complicated relationships, unexpected revelations and a lover whose concealed life threatens to unravel everything O.J. has built.

Through crime, family struggles and personal redemption, The Return of Omotara Johnson explores whether people can truly escape their past or whether unresolved choices always find their way back.

Star-Studded Cast Brings The Story To Life

The sequel features an impressive lineup of Nollywood stars drawn from different generations of the industry.

Leading the production is Bukky Wright, who reprises her role and also serves as producer of the film.

Joining her is veteran actor Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD), alongside Chidi Mokeme, Timini Egbuson, Shaffy Bello, Nse Ikpe-Etim, Ali Nuhu and Lilian Esoro.

The casting reflects a blend of established screen legends and contemporary actors, creating anticipation among audiences eager to see how the characters interact in the unfolding drama.

Each performer brings a distinct screen identity that is expected to strengthen the emotional and dramatic weight of the film.

From Cult Classic To Cinema Comeback

When Omotara Johnson was first released in 2009, it became recognised among Yoruba film audiences for its intense storytelling and memorable lead performance.

Over the years, the movie maintained a loyal fan base and remained one of the titles frequently discussed by viewers who appreciate classic Nollywood productions.

With the sequel arriving years later, expectations are high for how the story evolves while preserving the identity that made the original memorable.

To help reconnect audiences with the story, Bukky Wright has made the original Omotara Johnson Parts 1 and 2 available for free streaming on her official YouTube platform, allowing both longtime fans and newer viewers to revisit the world before the sequel arrives.

Countdown To Release

Distribution for the movie is being handled by Nile Entertainment, with cinema details and ticket information expected to become available closer to release through major exhibition platforms.

As anticipation continues to grow, The Return of Omotara Johnson is shaping up to be more than a sequel—it is a return to a familiar story with higher stakes, bigger revelations and a new chapter for one of Nollywood’s iconic female characters.
