Nollywood actress Scarlet Gomez has revealed that portraying the ambitious and powerful Wura Adeleke in MultiChoice’s hit series Wura required her to seek therapy to manage the emotional strain of the role.
In the show, Wura is a formidable woman navigating the high-stakes world of the mining industry, often prioritizing power and ambition over family. As the fourth season, comprising 130 episodes, prepares to premiere on March 30, Gomez shared how therapy and a strong support system helped her separate herself from her character’s intense persona.
“How I strike a balance… therapy and family. I’m grateful that I have the right support system around me to kind of help me stay grounded,” Gomez told TheCable Lifestyle during a virtual press briefing on Wednesday.
The role of Wura has propelled Gomez further into the spotlight, showcasing her talent to a wider audience. Yet, she is careful not to let the character define her career.
“It is out there for everyone to see. It put me out there, and I am grateful for it. ‘Wura’ made people pay attention. You know when you have this talent on the side that has been around, and nobody is,” she said.
Gomez emphasized that she actively avoids being typecast, turning down roles similar to Wura to ensure her versatility as an actress remains intact. “I am not the type to put myself in a box, so even when they try to bring characters that are similar to Wura, I deliberately try to turn them down because I do not want to have to replicate what Wura,” she explained.
She also highlighted the wider impact of the series on Nollywood, noting its contribution to promoting female-led productions.
“Wura has shown that stories led by women can captivate audiences and succeed. It opens doors for more roles that celebrate strong, multidimensional female characters,” Gomez added.
Fans can expect a more nuanced and emotionally vulnerable Wura in the upcoming season. According to Gomez, viewers will see sides of Wura that were previously hidden.
“Basically, I think in this season, they get to see her in a way that they have seen her before. Now she becomes more emotional, more vulnerable. They get to see her be in situations that were there, but nothing like this ever before,” Gomez said.
She continued, describing the challenges Wura will face in the new episodes:
“Right now, it feels like she is about to lose everything. And the challenges as well, they’re different. People might have to be able to connect to her on a more emotional level now. Now she feels more human than before. Before, it felt like she was untouchable, but now it feels like she can also go through things that normal people go through.
“And she’s not as high and mighty as everybody thinks. She’s also having to channel through the realisation of a relationship she put to me, and finding out that she is our daughter, and having to put all of that into perspective as well.”
With this season, Gomez promises fans a Wura who is more relatable and emotionally complex, while further proving her range and depth as one of Nollywood’s leading actresses.
