The 2026 Academy Awards delivered another unforgettable night in Hollywood as some of the biggest names in global cinema gathered to celebrate outstanding achievements in filmmaking. 


The prestigious awards ceremony, often referred to as the Oscars, featured intense competition across several categories, emotional speeches, and a few surprising victories that kept movie lovers around the world glued to the event.


For much of the night, attention focused on two major films that dominated the nominations list. Sinners, a vampire epic directed by Ryan Coogler, led the race with an impressive 16 nominations, while One Battle After Another followed closely with 13 nominations. 


Both films were widely considered the strongest contenders in several major categories, making the ceremony one of the most anticipated in recent years.


When the biggest award of the night, Best Picture, was finally announced, One Battle After Another emerged victorious. 


The film’s strong storytelling, performances, and direction helped it edge out other nominated titles including Bugonia, Frankenstein, F1, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value, Sinners, and Train Dreams. The win solidified the film’s place as one of the most celebrated productions of the year.


In the acting categories, several stars delivered standout performances that earned them top honours. Jessie Buckley won the award for Best Actress for her role in Hamnet, beating nominees such as Rose Byrne, Kate Hudson, Renate Reinsve, and Emma Stone. Her emotional performance in the historical drama was widely praised by critics and audiences alike.


Meanwhile, Michael B. Jordan took home the award for Best Actor for his role in Sinners. His powerful performance stood out among a strong lineup that included Timothée Chalamet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ethan Hawke, and Wagner Moura.


The supporting acting categories also produced memorable wins. Veteran actor Sean Penn won Best Supporting Actor for his role in One Battle After Another, while Amy Madigan secured Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Weapons. Both actors were applauded for bringing depth and authenticity to their respective roles.


The award for Best Director went to Paul Thomas Anderson for One Battle After Another, further strengthening the film’s dominance at the ceremony. His direction was praised for its creativity and storytelling, helping the film secure multiple awards throughout the evening.


In other major categories, the animated feature award went to KPop Demon Hunters, while Sentimental Value won Best International Feature. 

The documentary category was won by Mr Nobody Against Putin, which impressed viewers with its powerful storytelling.


The night also celebrated excellence in technical filmmaking. Sinners won Best Original Score and Best Cinematography, while Frankenstein claimed awards for Production Design, Costume Design, and Make-Up and Hairstyling. 

The Best Visual Effects category was won by Avatar: Fire and Ash, showcasing the continued dominance of high-end visual storytelling in modern cinema.


Another highlight of the evening was the Best Original Song category, which was won by “Golden” from KPop Demon Hunters. The song stood out among strong competitors, adding another milestone to the animated film’s success.


Overall, the 2026 Oscars proved to be a memorable celebration of cinematic excellence, with standout films, remarkable performances, and well-deserved victories that highlighted the creativity and talent driving the global film industry today.
