American rap icon Jay-Z has responded to speculation linking him to the ongoing rivalry between Drake and Kendrick Lamar, firmly denying any involvement in the controversy surrounding the Super Bowl halftime show selection.

The debate gained traction after Kendrick Lamar’s high-profile performance at the Super Bowl, which followed a dominant run in 2024 marked by the release of widely discussed tracks like Meet the Grahams and Not Like Us. His continued momentum into 2025, including appearances at major global events, led many fans to view him as the standout figure in hip-hop at the time.

However, his selection for the prestigious halftime stage sparked backlash online, with some critics alleging that Jay-Z—whose company Roc Nation has co-produced the Super Bowl halftime show since 2019—intentionally favored Lamar as part of a broader effort to sideline Drake amid their long-running feud.

Addressing the claims in an interview with GQ Magazine, Jay-Z dismissed the narrative, insisting that the decision was based strictly on merit rather than personal alliances or industry politics.

“What do I have to do with that? I chose the guy who was having a monster year. I think it was the right choice. It was not in some alliance with a battle. Would I care about those two guys battling? It has nothing to do with me,” he said.

The rapper and business mogul made it clear that he operates independently and does not engage in behind-the-scenes maneuvering tied to artists’ personal conflicts. He also expressed frustration over being dragged into a situation he believes has nothing to do with him.

“Have at it, have fun. Not just me, they dragged everybody into it, like everyone was part of this conspiracy to undermine Drake, I guess. Like what the fk? I am f*g Jay Z. Respectfully for what? To what end? It could be that these guys do not just like each other, and I think they have not liked each other for a long time,” he added.

Jay-Z further suggested that the tension between Drake and Kendrick Lamar is not a recent development, but rather a long-standing rivalry that has gradually intensified over time. According to him, such conflicts in the music industry often build beneath the surface before becoming public.

Drawing from personal experience, he compared the situation to his own past feud with fellow rap legend Nas. He explained that their rivalry also developed over time due to a series of underlying issues, rather than a single triggering event.

“I think this has been brewing, just like me, and Nas was brewing. It did not happen at the quarter stamp; it was a whole bunch of stuff leading up to that point. It was like little things that led up to that point, and when it happened, it happened,” he said.

Reflecting on that chapter of his career, Jay-Z admitted he has since come to regret how the situation unfolded, despite the mutual respect that now exists between him and Nas.

“I actually regret that because I really like Nas, he is a really nice guy,” he added.

The clarification from Jay-Z appears to put to rest claims that Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl appearance was influenced by anything beyond his recent achievements. It also highlights the broader issue of how fan speculation and online discourse can quickly assign motives to industry decisions, especially when high-profile rivalries are involved.

As the debate continues among fans, Jay-Z’s comments reinforce his stance that artistic recognition—particularly on global platforms like the Super Bowl—should be determined by performance and impact, not personal feuds.
