President Donald Trump has announced that the United States military carried out what he described as a “large-scale strike” against Venezuela, leading to the capture and removal of the country’s president, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife from the country.
Trump made the announcement early Saturday via a post on his Truth Social platform, claiming the operation was successful and decisive. According to him, Maduro and his wife were apprehended during the operation and flown out of Venezuela by US forces.
“The United States of America has successfully carried out a large-scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolás Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, captured and flown out of the country,” Trump wrote.
The announcement followed reports of explosions and intense military activity in Caracas during the early hours of Saturday. Journalists in the Venezuelan capital reported hearing loud blasts and observing aircraft flying overhead, while power outages affected several parts of the city.
The first explosion was said to have occurred around 1:50 a.m. local time, triggering panic among residents.
Although Venezuelan authorities had yet to issue an official statement at the time of filing this report, the sudden military action marked a major escalation in tensions between Washington and Caracas.
Trump has in recent weeks repeatedly warned that the United States was preparing to target alleged drug trafficking and criminal networks operating in Venezuela, which he claims are protected by elements within the Maduro administration.
The US president had earlier stated that land-based strikes would begin “soon” as part of an expanded counter-narcotics campaign.
His administration has reportedly intensified operations in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean, destroying more than 30 vessels linked to suspected illicit trafficking activities.
Last month, Trump also ordered a blockade of sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela, a move that significantly tightened economic pressure on the country and disrupted its oil exports, a critical source of national revenue.
In December, the Central Intelligence Agency was reported to have carried out a drone strike on a Venezuelan coastal port facility.
According to CNN, the operation marked the first known US attack on a target inside Venezuelan territory, raising international concern over the potential for a broader conflict.
The reported capture of Maduro represents the most dramatic development so far in the prolonged standoff between the United States and Venezuela. Maduro has long accused Washington of attempting to destabilize his government, while the US has maintained that its actions are aimed at restoring stability and combating transnational crime.
As details continue to emerge, global leaders and international organizations are expected to respond to the development. Analysts say the incident could significantly reshape political dynamics in Latin America and deepen geopolitical tensions beyond the region.
The international community remains on alert as official confirmations, diplomatic reactions, and further developments are awaited.
