Nigerian rapper Emeka Akumefule, popularly known as Blaqbonez, has made it clear that his much-discussed rap rivalries are authentic and not orchestrated for attention.
Speaking on Apple Music 1’s Africa Now Radio with Nandi Madida, the “Back in Uni” crooner explained that his confrontations in the music industry are driven by passion and the desire to build a lasting legacy, not by public relations strategies.
“No, it’s not PR. It’s about legacy; the type of rapper I want to be seen as. Everything I do is for the image I’m building and the legacy I want to leave,” he said.
Discussing his newly released fourth studio album, No Excuses, Blaqbonez shared that the project represents a new chapter in his creative journey and his commitment to constant self-improvement.
“I’ve made three albums already and it felt like I had set a crazy standard. With each album, I have to try to outdo the other ones. I went into the studio determined to make my discography even better. One day, I saw a book titled No Excuses, and it hit me — that’s exactly what I’ve been doing. I put in everything so that when I release it, I have no regrets, no excuses,” he said.
The rapper described No Excuses as one of his proudest artistic achievements, adding that it captures the evolution of his sound and artistry.
“It’s one of my proudest accomplishments. Each album stands tall, and this one takes it to a different level. Four albums in, and every one of them is fire. I’m so proud of myself,” Blaqbonez said.
He explained that the themes of the album were inspired by his everyday life and emotions, reflecting both the highs and lows of his personal experiences.
“My life is multifaceted. If something crazy happens, I talk about it. If I’m having a chill or emotional day, you’ll hear it. Even if somebody’s billing me too much, I’ll put it in the music. It’s just my life; raw and real,” he said.
On the creative process, the rapper credited producers such as Jae5, Blaze Beats, Tellz, Ramoney, and Ragee for their contributions to the album’s high-quality sound.
“I didn’t cut any corners. Before you even talk about my verses, you can already tell the production is crazy,” he added.
