Nigerian music mogul and producer, Don Jazzy, has opened up about a difficult period in his career, revealing that he nearly quit music after the sudden collapse of Mo’Hits Records in 2012.
The label, which he co-founded with D’banj, dominated the Nigerian music industry in the 2000s, producing chart-topping hits and defining the Afrobeats sound.
However, internal disagreements between the two partners led to an unexpected breakup that left fans and industry watchers stunned.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Don Jazzy admitted that the end of Mo’Hits was one of the toughest moments of his life.
He revealed that he was on the verge of abandoning music altogether and relocating abroad to start a new life.
According to him, it was the support and encouragement from close friends that stopped him from walking away from the industry. “When Mo’Hits ended, I thought that was it. I almost packed up to move abroad. But friends encouraged me to stay and start again, and Mavin Records was born,” he said.
Reflecting on the experience, the producer and entrepreneur said it helped him build emotional strength and resilience.
“Since then, I’ve learned not to let anything break me,” he added. Don Jazzy explained that the collapse of Mo’Hits was a turning point that forced him to reinvent himself and his approach to music production and management.
Following the breakup, he went on to establish Mavin Records in May 2012, carrying along several former Mo’Hits acts such as Wande Coal, Dr SID, and D’Prince.
The new label also became home to emerging stars who would later become global sensations, including Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks, Korede Bello, and Di’ja. Under Don Jazzy’s leadership, Mavin Records evolved into one of Africa’s most successful music powerhouses, setting new standards in talent development, production quality, and business strategy.
Over the years, Mavin has continued to grow and adapt to the ever-changing music landscape, discovering and nurturing a new generation of Afrobeats superstars.
Its current roster boasts some of the biggest names in the industry, including Rema, Ayra Starr, Ladipoe, Crayon, Magixx, Boy Spyce, Bayanni, Johnny Drille, and DJ Big N. Each of these artists has contributed to the label’s global success and solidified its reputation as a breeding ground for hitmakers.
In 2024, Mavin Records reached a new milestone when Universal Music Group (UMG) acquired a majority stake in Mavin Global, signaling a major step in the label’s international expansion.
The partnership marked a new chapter in Don Jazzy’s career, giving the label access to global resources and platforms while maintaining its strong African identity.
Despite his success, Don Jazzy remains humble and reflective about his journey. He often shares life lessons with his fans and upcoming artists, emphasizing perseverance, teamwork, and innovation.
His story of nearly quitting and later rebuilding one of Africa’s most influential music brands serves as a powerful testament to resilience and the importance of believing in one’s vision even after failure.
From Mo’Hits to Mavin, Don Jazzy’s journey is a story of rebirth, courage, and legacy one that continues to inspire the next generation of African creatives.
