The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Wednesday, October 1, 2025, as a public holiday to commemorate the nation’s 65th Independence Anniversary. The announcement was made on Monday, September 29, 2025, by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the government.

In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Dr. Tunji-Ojo extended congratulations to all Nigerians, both at home and in the diaspora, on this historic milestone.

He emphasised the significance of upholding the patriotic spirit, unity, and resilience that have sustained the country since gaining independence in 1960.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo urged citizens to remain committed to the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, which focuses on national rebirth, economic transformation, and collective prosperity. “We call on all Nigerians to continue to embrace unity and work together to ensure that the nation grows stronger in peace, progress, and development,” he stated.

Highlighting the essence of the day, the minister noted, “Independence Day is not just a celebration, but a reminder of the sacrifices made by our founding fathers. It is a day to reflect on our collective responsibilities towards building a stronger Nigeria.”

He encouraged citizens to actively participate in the nation-building process, stressing that “Every Nigerian, whether at home or abroad, has a role to play in the nation’s progress. Let us use this occasion to renew our commitment to unity, peace, and sustainable development.”

Dr. Tunji-Ojo expressed confidence that with the cooperation of all Nigerians, the country would continue to experience growth and development across all sectors.

He also urged citizens to reflect on the nation’s journey and achievements over the past 65 years, noting the progress made in various areas, including governance, infrastructure, education, and economic development.

The minister’s message comes at a time when the government is emphasizing citizen engagement in national affairs, reinforcing the importance of shared responsibility in shaping Nigeria’s future.

By linking the Independence Day celebration to the Renewed Hope Agenda, the government seeks to motivate citizens to align with national development goals and work collectively towards sustainable progress.

In his closing remarks, Dr. Tunji-Ojo wished Nigerians a happy and memorable Independence Day celebration, encouraging reflection on the nation’s enduring journey of unity and resilience.

He reiterated that the commemoration is not only a celebration of Nigeria’s past achievements but also a call to action for all citizens to contribute meaningfully to the country’s future.

As Nigeria marks 65 years of independence, the federal government’s declaration of a public holiday underscores the importance of national unity, patriotism, and the collective effort required to sustain peace and drive development in the country.
