Nigerian celebrity chef Hilda Baci has officially kicked off her historic attempt to cook the world’s largest pot of jollof rice, with the cooking already in full swing at Eko Hotel Car Park B, Lagos. The much-anticipated food festival was relocated from Muri Okunola Park to the new venue to handle the massive turnout of supporters and registered guests.
The monumental cooking challenge features a custom-built pot measuring six metres across, 1.1 metres high at the edges, and 1.3 metres deep. Earlier in the day, Hilda personally scrubbed the enormous pot while her mother led prayers, blessing the exercise before the first ingredients hit the fire. Now, the heat is on, and the pot has begun filling with rice, tomatoes, and spices.
Organisers confirmed that 250 bags of rice will be used to prepare the dish, with the specially designed pot capable of holding up to 22,619 litres of food—though it will be filled to about 80 percent. The event is not just a cooking marathon; it also doubles as a cultural celebration, with live music, dance, food exhibitions, and interactive showcases that highlight jollof rice as a symbol of unity and pride across West Africa.
