Nigerian media personality, Radiogad, has stirred heated reactions online after commenting on the recent celebrity wedding of singer Mr Eazi and fashion entrepreneur Temi Otedola.
According to him, Mr Eazi made a major mistake by allowing Temi to take up his surname, Ajibade, instead of adopting her famous family name.
The wedding, which captured the attention of fans across Nigeria and beyond, saw Temi Otedola, daughter of billionaire businessman Femi Otedola, officially become Temi Ajibade. While many fans celebrated the union, others raised questions about the change of surname, especially given the Otedola family’s influence in business and entertainment circles.
In a video making the rounds online, Radiogad expressed his controversial opinion, stating that Mr Eazi missed a golden opportunity by not taking the Otedola surname. He argued that sometimes a man should humble himself and consider the benefits of marrying into a powerful family.
His exact words were: “The biggest mistake Mr Eazi made was giving his surname to Temi Otedola. Mr Eazi na you suppose collect Temi Otedola surname. You no know who you marry? Sometimes a man suppose humble himself, collect surname of a woman, especially when you are marrying someone as powerful, influential as Otedola pikin. Mr Eazi, if you collect that surname you are doing yourself a favour.”
Radiogad’s statement has since gone viral, with social media divided over his take. While some netizens agreed, pointing out that the Otedola name carries generational wealth, political connections, and global recognition, others defended Mr Eazi, insisting that love and tradition should guide marriage decisions, not money or fame.
Fans of the couple have also weighed in, noting that Mr Eazi has already carved out a successful career for himself without having to rely on his in-laws’ name.
The singer, who is behind hits like Leg Over and Skin Tight, has built an international music brand, collaborated with global artists, and is also a tech entrepreneur with investments across Africa.
For many, the debate touches on broader issues about gender roles, cultural expectations, and the balance of power in marriages involving wealthy or influential families. Traditionally, in Nigeria, women take their husband’s surnames after marriage, though exceptions exist, especially in modern, high-profile unions.
Despite the controversy, Mr Eazi and Temi appear unfazed. Following their wedding, Temi has been actively sharing moments from the ceremony, while Mr Eazi has been seen celebrating the new chapter of their lives together.
Whether Radiogad’s comments were made in jest or as genuine advice, they have successfully ignited conversation about marriage traditions in Nigeria’s celebrity space. What remains clear is that the couple, regardless of surnames, are charting their own path together.
