Music executive Ubi Franklin has waded into the long-standing conversation about whether Nigeria’s Afrobeats heavyweights Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy would ever set aside their differences and collaborate on a song together.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Afropolitan Podcast, Franklin explained that while the trio are globally recognized as Afrobeats’ “Big 3,” their dominance in the industry makes them rivals rather than collaborators. He likened the situation to the way leading corporations in other industries compete fiercely, citing Nigerian banks as an example.
According to him, such rivalry is natural and inevitable when three powerful forces operate within the same space.
“It would be difficult for Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy to come together,” Franklin said. “I will speak for Davido, I have never heard him for once say something ill about Wizkid or Burna Boy. And I’m sure it’s the same for them.
But the environment industry they are in will make it difficult for them to work together. It’s like the rivalry between the top banks in Nigeria. In every industry, there is the Big 3.”
The music executive emphasized that the competitive edge among the three isn’t rooted in personal animosity, but rather in the nature of the music business.
While fans often perceive tension and rivalry as hostility, Franklin suggested it is mostly entertainment-driven and not as deep as many believe.
He made it clear that at least from his close association with Davido, the singer does not spend time gossiping or plotting against his colleagues.
On the contrary, Davido has remained focused on his craft and global music moves. Franklin added that he strongly believes Wizkid and Burna Boy share a similar outlook, stressing that there is mutual respect despite the competitive environment.
Ubi Franklin’s comments once again highlight the complex dynamics of Afrobeats’ global rise. The genre’s three biggest stars have each built loyal fan bases that sometimes clash online, fueling narratives of rivalry.
While Wizkid is celebrated for his smooth and laid-back style, Davido is renowned for his energetic delivery and hit-making ability, while Burna Boy has carved a distinct space with his Afro-fusion sound and Grammy-winning artistry.
Fans across the world have continued to hope for a possible collaboration among the trio, believing that such a project would be historic for African music.
However, Franklin’s analysis suggests that while mutual respect exists, the structural rivalry within the music industry may prevent that dream from materializing anytime soon.
For now, the “Big 3” continue to dominate global charts individually, expanding the reach of Afrobeats to new audiences. Whether or not they will ever come together on a song remains uncertain, but their collective impact on the music industry remains undeniable.
