When a film features some of Nollywood’s most beloved actors, expectations naturally rise. 27 Letters to You, currently streaming on ChinneyLove Eze TV on YouTube, was one such film. With a cast led by Timini Egbuson and Ego Nwosu, and with the reputation of producer ChinneyLove Eze—known for hits like Hire a Man and Devil in Agbada—I settled down to watch with high anticipation. Sadly, what unfolded was a love story that promised so much but delivered so little.

From the outset, the film carried the aura of something fresh. The title itself, 27 Letters to You, suggested intimacy, depth, and a narrative that would unravel in layers of emotion. However, the story seemed to stumble almost immediately. Instead of a compelling romantic tale with strong character arcs, what viewers got was a flat, directionless script that lacked emotional pull. The characters moved through their motions, but the heart of the film—the “why” behind their actions and the chemistry that should have driven the story—was conspicuously absent.

I rarely feel genuine disappointment watching Nollywood romance, but this was one of those rare occasions. It was like expecting a gourmet meal and being served an undercooked dish. The fall was sharp and unsettling, much like the fall of the naira’s value—abrupt, jarring, and frustrating.

What hurt most was that the actors themselves are capable of so much more. Timini Egbuson has built a career on charisma, charm, and versatility. Ego Nwosu has equally proven her talent in past roles. Here, though, their performances seemed restrained—not necessarily by their abilities, but by a weak storyline that left them with little to work with. Even the supporting cast, including Janelle Chikaima and George Chux, could not salvage what was essentially a hollow narrative.

The only silver lining to this entire experience was its brevity. At just over an hour, the film ended before the disappointment dragged on too far. If it had stretched into the typical two-hour Nollywood runtime, it would have been unbearable. In that sense, its short length was its saving grace.

I thought of writing a detailed breakdown of the plot and its flaws, but honestly, it would be a waste of creative energy. A review should feel like an exploration of art and craft, not an autopsy of a project that lacked both. To me, 27 Letters to You was not worth the time—and certainly not worth the data it consumed to stream it.

That said, ChinneyLove Eze has proven time and again that she can deliver captivating Nollywood content. This film might just be a misstep in an otherwise successful career. Still, it’s a reminder that even established filmmakers and star-studded casts can fall flat without a solid story at the core.

For viewers seeking a moving romance with heart and depth, 27 Letters to You will likely leave you unsatisfied. For me, it’s a firm miss—one I won’t be revisiting.
