INEC Threatens To Destroy All Unclaimed PVCs

INEC Threatens To Destroy All Unclaimed PVCs

The Ondo State Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)  has revealed that it may burn unclaimed Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) lying in their office, if they are not claimed before the 2019 election, by their owners.

This was disclosed by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Rufus Akeju, on Monday in Akure while talking to journalists.

Mr. Akeju who is just transferred to the state from Osun has resumed duties since January.
He further disclosed that despite the Commission's attempts to sensitize voters to come and pick up their cards, they still have about  370,464 cards unclaimed.
“The commission is making efforts almost on daily basis for voters to get their PVCs and if eventually some of them are not collected, the commission may decide to burn it or make it unusable as to avoid using it to manipulate the coming election,” he said.
Mr. Ajeku said the commission would carry out the burning of the cards transparently, if they eventually decides on doing so.
He said out of 1,659,186 that registered for the cards, only 1,288,722 cards have been distributed so far.
“We now have new and improve data capturing for moderate and effective capturing,” he said.
“We have introduced additional card readers in case one is malfunctioning in a particular unit.”
